Serving the Homewood community, Baptist Health Brookwood Hospital is a 595-bed acute-care hospital located in Birmingham, Alabama. The facility offers a full complement of services, including emergency care, cardiovascular care, bariatrics, orthopedics and rehabilitation, and surgical services. It also is one of the largest providers of psychiatric care in the state. The hospital has earned Primary Stroke Center certification from The Joint Commission, and its bariatric program has been accredited as a Comprehensive Center by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP). The Women’s Medical Center provides comprehensive women’s services through all stages of life, including gynecologic surgery, maternity care, and labor and delivery services. At Baptist Health Brookwood Hospital Surgical Tech III, demonstrates through clinical practice a clear understanding of sterile techniques and has a working knowledge of the specialized
instrumentation and equipment required for a variety of specialty procedures. Demonstrates competency to operate all specialty instruments, supplies, and equipment to at least one tertiary specialty service.

Essential Functions
• Responsible for the maintenance of an orderly surgical field and for consistently passing instruments and supplies quickly and efficiently to the surgeon.
• Able to anticipate and prioritize the needs of the various steps associated with the procedure.
• Takes part in sponge, needle and instruments counts as dictated by the procedure.
• Responsible for maintaining the surgical specimen in a manner which identifies and preservesthem for pathology evaluation.
• Assistsin ordering and stocking ofspecialty supplies under the direction of management staff and departmental guidelines
• In collaboration with a Registered Nurse, serves as a technical subject matter expert for at least one tertiary specialty.
• Providesscrub servicesfor major proceduresin at least 2 surgical specialties(independently with high physician satisfaction).
• Prepares and conductstechnical performance-oriented training related to specialty service.
• Serves as a preceptor to perioperative personnel rotating through the scrub roles associated with their primary specialty(s) and/or second circulates on major tertiary procedures.
• Collaborates with surgeons and proactively addresses case needs when performing duties in either the scrub or second circulator roles.
• In collaboration with the clinical leadership, assists in workflow process improvement activities, contributes to organizational effectiveness, and demonstrates career growth and development.
• Transports and delivers items, equipment, and medications (excluding controlled substances and IV chemotherapy drugs) throughout the facility.
• May have limited accessto areasstoring medications.
• Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
• Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.
Education/Training:
High school graduate or equivalent.
Successful completion of:
• Surgical Technology training program; or
• Orlando Health training program
Licensure/Certification:
Maintains current BLS/HealthCare Provider certification.
Experience:
Four(4) yearsurgical tech experience. (CST and two (2) years ofsurgical tech experience may substitute for the required experience).
