Baptist Health Shelby Hospital is a 252-bed medical and surgical facility located in Alabaster, Alabama. The hospital offers a complete complement of services, including behavioral health, cardiovascular care, diagnostic imaging, orthopedics and a full spectrum of surgical services. The hospital has earned Primary Stroke Center certification from The Joint Commission; high performing ratings from U.S. News and World Report for heart attack, heart failure and stroke care; and Accredited Cardiac Cath Lab accreditation and Certified Transcatheter Valve designations from the American College of Cardiology.

About the Chief Nursing Officer

 

The Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) provides leadership and coordinates activities, processes, and policies to ensure high-quality patient care, guided by system-wide nursing practices and standards.The CNO works closely with the Vice President of Nursing for Orlando Health to provide leadership and strategic direction aligned with the organization’s mission, values and the core mission, vision, and values of nursing. 

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Leads the delivery of nursing care, ensuring consistency in standards, evidence-based practices, and alignment with the patient care and professional practice models.
  • Fosters interdisciplinary collaboration to support excellence in clinical care and patient outcomes.
  • Oversees the development, implementation, and evaluation of nursing policies, programs, and services aligned with professional standards and organizational values.
  • Serves as a key liaison and advisor to medical staff and executive leadership on clinical matters and strategic decisions impacting nursing and patient care.
  • Partners with physician and administrative leaders to drive quality improvement, regulatory compliance, and patient safety.
  • Contributes to system-wide nursing initiatives and collaborates with other Chief Nursing Officers through the Nurse Executive Council.
  • Leads strategic planning and operational execution for nursing services, including budgeting, staffing, and organizational structure.
  • Develops and implements strategies for recruitment, retention, and recognition of nursing excellence.
  • Advocates for nursing across facility, organizational, and community levels.
  • Participates in contract negotiations and integrates healthcare technology to support service delivery.
  • Supports succession planning and builds relationships with external stakeholders, including donors, community leaders, and public partners.
  • Assumes operational responsibility as directed or in the absence of the President.

Qualifications

 

Required Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing.
  • Master’s degree in nursing, business or a related field.

Licensure/Certification

  • Maintains current RN licensure in the State of Alabama.
  • National speciality certification in Nursing Administration or Certified Nurse Executive (within 2 years of hire).

Required Experience

  • Minimum of ten (10) years progressive leadership experience in nursing and healthcare operations within a hospital. 
  • Experience in quality management, medical management, administration, and operational finance.
  • Experience in building strategic relationships with community leaders and physicians.
