Job Description

 

The security officer provides security services to ensure order and safety of patients, visitors and hospital personnel.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  • Escorts for visitors, employees, and students upon request.
  • Patrols all areas of the hospital internally and externally on foot, bicycle, and/or vehicle 24 hours a day in all weather conditions. (Only security officers who meet the driver’s license standards for operating an Orlando Health owned vehicle listed in the licensure/certifications section of this job description will be permitted to perform motor vehicle patrols.)
  • Provides key assists to all areas of the hospital, including sensitive areas to authorized personnel.
  • Detects suspicious activities within the campus and handles the situations appropriately.
  • Reports criminal activity to supervisor and law enforcement, as appropriate.
  • Investigates accident scenes, searches for and preserves evidence; investigates and interviews witnesses; makes oral and written reports; responds to varying situations with tact and diplomacy and deals with stressful, hostile or irrational person(s), whether due to physical or mental disability, drugs, or socio-economic differences or other factors and recommends legal action if needed.
  • Assists medical staff with the enforcement of Baker Act (F.S. 394.463) and Marchman Act (F.S. 397.675-397.6775) patients with the use of approved medical restraints as requested by physicians under Florida Statutes.
  • Works with law enforcement/correction officers dealing with patient/prisoner intake and status during the duration of their stay in the hospital. In addition officers will assist the Patient Care Coordinator with securing the status of non-publicity/high risk patients.
  • Reports all safety and security violations throughout the campus.
  • Responds to all inbound and outbound helicopter flights by ensuring the safety of the helipad and assist flight crew in handling and transporting of patient(s) as needed.
  • Uses and understands the operation of walk-through and hand held metal detectors.
  • Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
  • Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.

 

Other Related Functions

  • Responds to threats or acts of violence towards patients, staff, and/or visitors; hostage situations; adult/child abductions to include cordon of perimeter area; patient elopement; person down; emergency intake; fire alarms by responding to the location of incident and assist in fire suppression; severe weather; access control; hospital system failure; bomb threat or suspicious package and assist personal in searching area(s) in which the threat was made; hazardous materials/chemical spills.
  • Documents through an Event Report and photograph slip/trip and fall events for liability mitigation.
  • Enforces injunctions established by the state of Florida.
  • Responds to disturbance calls such as domestic disputes, disorderly conduct, fights in progress, and/or similar calls.
  • Assists department managers by escorting terminated employees.
  • Officers may be required to testify or be subpoenaed by any court proceedings.

Qualifications

Education/Training

  • High school graduate or equivalent. Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word for report writing purposes.

 

Licensure/Certification

  • Must have a valid Florida driver’s license and be insurable under the Orlando Health insurance carrier’s requirements and standards. (Security officers, who are unable to maintain this requirement after at least 90 days of employment must sign a “No Driving Document” which will be maintained in the officers department file and remain in effect until the approval to drive is given by the insurance carriers as determined during routine driving records checks.)
  • Must obtain a State of Florida Class “D” Security Officer License through the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services within 120 days of hire which must be renewed biannually before the license expires.
  • Must obtain Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) Certification within 120 days of hire which must be renewed annually before the certification expires.
  • Must obtain a Basic Security Officer Certification or higher level of certification through the International Association of Hospital Security and Safety within 120 days of hire and maintained at all times during employment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Scheduling flexibility preferred (Available for all shifts times, if needed)
  • During a Hurricane-Can be on site and support our needed hurricane teams.
  • The preferred candidate will be comfortable with transporting deceased patients within the hospital.
  • Strong customer service skills.
