Position Summary
Under the clinical direction of licensed Respiratory Therapists (RTs), Registered Nurses (RNs), and providers, the EMT / Paramedic
Respiratory Care Support assists with non‑invasive, non‑critical respiratory care activities in designated non‑ICU acute care settings. This role focuses on supportive respiratory treatments, monitoring, equipment management, and patient safety, and does not replace or function as a licensed Respiratory Therapist.
Essential Functions
• Assists licensed Respiratory Therapists and nursing staff in delivering ordered, non‑ICU respiratory therapies, including nebulizer
treatments and oxygen delivery, in accordance with provider orders, departmental policies, and scope of practice.
• Performs and documents basic patient assessments and reassessments, collaborating with RNs and RTs to communicate
changes in patient status promptly.
• Obtains EKGs as ordered by a licensed provider and communicate results per department protocol.
• Administers aerosolized medications and oxygen therapy strictly as ordered and under appropriate clinical supervision.
• Provides short‑term respiratory monitoring and support, escalating concerns to the RT, RN, or provider as appropriate.
• Assists with the stocking, cleaning, assembly, and maintenance of respiratory care equipment in accordance with infection
control and departmental standards.
• Supports patient comfort, safety, and mobility while adhering to Baptist Health patient‑centered care standards.
• Maintains accurate, timely documentation in the electronic medical record consistent with organizational and regulatory
requirements.
• Maintains compliance with all Baptist Health policies, procedures, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
• Maintains regular, punctual attendance in accordance with ADA, FMLA, and organizational standards.
• Perform other duties as assigned that are within scope, training, and competency.
Other Related Functions
• Participates in maintaining the department to be clean, safe, organized and stocked. Demonstrates awareness of patient’s rights
and legal issues.
• Complies with all standards as required by regulatory and accreditation agencies. Performs all other duties as assigned.
• The Paramedic must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the
patients.
• The individual must demonstrate a knowledge of principles of growth and development over the life span and possesses the
ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each
patient’s requirements related to his or her age specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in departments
policies, procedures, and competencies.
Education/Training
Successful completion of an AEMT education program
Licensure/Certification
• Currently licensed Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) by the Alabama Department of Public Health's (ADPH)
Office of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Trauma required.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) required.
Experience
One (1) year experience as an AEMT.
